Thumbs up isopropyl

I can get isopropyl at work pretty cheap and wanted to know how much I can put in to a 10 gallon tank without any problems? I have read that with all the gas companies selling E-10 you need to add some methanol or isopropyl to your gas to keep humidity out of the mix, thanks.

Based on reading wikipedia, isopropyl alcohol can be seperated from water by adding salt, but will not prevent water getting mixed in in the first place.

In fact, sounds like isopropyl alcohol is just as water soluble as ethanol.

Isopropanol is a major ingredient in "dry-gas" fuel additive. In significant quantities, water is a problem in fuel tanks as it separates from the gasoline and can freeze in the supply lines at cold temperatures. The isopropanol does not remove the water from the gasoline. Rather, the isopropanol solubilizes the water in the gasoline. Once soluble, the water does not pose the same risk as insoluble water as it will no longer accumulate in the supply lines and freeze. Isopropanol is often sold in aerosol cans as a windscreen de-icer.

Why are you worried about getting moisture in your gas? How long does it take you to go through a full tank?

I respectfully suggest that the real question you should be asking is - Should you be putting in any at all? Again, ethanol, methanol and isopropyl alcoho all interact with water in the same way. Adding isopropyl alocohol to counteract ethanol is like spraying your car with water in order to dry it off.

Anyway, as far as how much if you still want to do it, a quick Google search turned up one suggestion of 12 oz per 10 gallons. (And additionally indicates that the reason isopropyl alcohol is added to gas tanks is because it mixes with the water and helps prevent the moisture from freezing in the fuel lines. But again, the ethanol does the exact same thing. That's why methanol is often used in water injection kits, because its less likely to freeze. You appear to be in Miami so freezing fuel lines isn't an issue anyway.)

The reasoning behind my madness is that any combustible liquid that I can add to my gas tank that is cheaper than gasoline and will not do any harm to my engine will extend my average gas mileage. As expensive as gasoline is, I need all the help I can get. Thank you.

you sure that's not going to tip your A/F ratio or make your engine run hotter? I have no clue either way. These are just a few side effects to keep in mind.

Guess what #1 ........... S2000 owners manual states no more than 10% ETOH.
Guess what #2 ........... Ethanol, methanol, isopropyl are ALL hydrophillic (attracts water). They ALL take up water and keeps it in solution. NONE will prevent water from getting into the gas.
Guess what #3 ........... If you use E10, you are already at the limit of alcohol content as dictated by your owner's manual. If you add ANY more alcohol, you will go beyond that 10%.
Guess what #4 ........... Don't believe everything you read in "Readers Digest".
