Default Issue with oil change.

So I tired to do my first oil change on the S. I followed Xviper's thread on how to do it. Once I started the car up to get the oil flowing it started to spurt out everywhere and I rushed and turned the car off. It looks like all the oil was spit out and much of the under carriage was covered with oil.

I wanted to ask about some advice on what could have happened. I think it might be the oil filter, maybe it wasn't on tight enough. I know I torqued the oil pan to the correct ammount and I tightened the filter by hand.

I'm using the Hamp oil filter by Blue Fin Tuning. Might that be a problem with a s/c engine?

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks guys,
Dan

If most of the oil seems to be down low I would think it came from the filter. I'll hazard a guess that the old ring seal from the first filter didn't come off when you changed filters - in essence you have two rubber ring gaskets in place (which will not give a good seal).

Thanks I'll check out the ring seal issue, I had not thought of that.

*I just checked the old filter and it does not have the seal on it. Sometimes you feel like a total idiot when you make mistakes like this.

So the Hamp Filter from Blue Fin Tuning should be fine, other then my seal issue?

Just put my HAMP in this weekend no problems.....guess the gasket is the problem. Did you look at your old oil filter to see if some of the rubber is missing?

I ordered a case of them from speeeding. Used two so far with no issues. I do recall someone claiming that one he installed felt like it "bottomed out" while tightning it down and didn't seem to seal very tight.
Many other owners seem very happy with them. Roadrage recomends (and uses) the Honda PDX but I don't think he has tested the HAMP yet.

Common "noobie" mistake.. no worries, as long as you shut down right away, it just made a mess.. In the future, ALWAYS double check that the old rubber seal came off the oil filter by checking the base on the engine.

I wasn't mislead I was just using your write up as a brief reference; I should have read it more thoroughly. But I in fact was under the impression that I had removed the seal and cleaned away the extra oil drippings. This it's my fault that I did not double check, I'm just glad I had the help to guide myself where to check again.

The write up was excellent as they are whenever I use them. Just my own negligence, but we learn from our mistakes though.
