J's STB is in! But how do I Remove the OEM Heatshield???
I need to remove the OEM Heatshield to install the J's Engine Dampener, but I couldn't get it off.
I couldn't get a wrench on the 4th bolt (the one nearest the firewall. Well actually, I did get a wrench on it, but couldn't get any room to turn the wrench at all.
I tried to remove the header heatshield first. I got all of the bolts off, but couldn't pull it out. There wasn't enough clearance between the header and the engine heatshield. Is there some trick to getting it out? I was going to put a jack under the motor to lift it a bit, but I didn't want to damage the motor mounts.
Could anyone explain exactly how to get the 4th bolt loose (I know it doesn't need to come all the way out) and exactly what kind of wrench to use, and how long it needs to be.
I have used a 10mm "gearwrench", a ratcheting box end wrench. It's a bit of contortionist act to reach. I wouldn't recommend trying it with the header still hot, Let it cool first. It's a decent p.i.t.a.
It is important to know that the 4th screw is a slip on. so all you need to do is loosen it a little and then pull the heat sheild up..... If you have stock headers, I would do this from the bottom. It is possible to loosen the screw from the top but requires a lot of patience.....
1. Is it possible to remove the header heatshield completely before removing the large heatshield?
2. There is no way to reach the 4th bolt from underneath. It is possible to get a wrench on it from between the heatshields, but the header heatshield prevents any turning of the wrench.
Can anyone be more specific about the technique of loosening the 4th heatshield bolt???
Either you need a different wrench or help from someone with thinner arms, better fingers, or more focus.. many of us have turned this bolt from above and/or below.. you just get a wrench on it and work it.. no trick to it. It just needs to be loosened and the shield can be pulled off.
