Just want to get some insights before I try it for the second time.

yes i did. i seem to have lost pedal pressure because the engine spinning knocked the clutch fork out of its holder causing the rod on the slave cylinder to fall out.
Isn't that enough reason to stop driving the car, remove the transmission and reinstall the clutch?
Or at least get underneath, remove the slave to have a look throught the small hole in the transmission?

basically the release bearing sits in a groove and the back of the release bearing has a large face to pull on the fingers of the pressure plate and has another ring to hold the other side of the fingers when they are moving back.
the release bearing has a large face to PULL the fingers of the pressure plate?

I do not have a manual handy so I can not check to see how the S2000 system works but on most clutchs the release bearing Pushes the fingers of the pressure plate. The release bearing does not even touch the fingers of the pressure plate when the clutch pedal is all the way up.

Trapping the release bearing to the pressure plate fingers would force the slave cylinder to the fully extended position so the hydraulic fluid would not be able to extend the cylinder any more thus the hard pedal.

The tapping you heard was probably the fingers of the release bearing fork pushing, not pulling, against the fingers of the pressure plate.

I did not know we had a pull type clutch. I'll have to check out the manual once I get a chance.

I'm not driving the car. I bled the clutch, turned the car on tried pushing down on the clutch twice, heard the weird noise, turned it off, and lost all pedal pressure. it's going to be on jackstands until I get time to take it apart again. when I took off the slave cylinder the fork was knocked out of its holder, and the rod fell out, and I had to retract the slave cylinder piston.

I think the heavy pedal was because the release bearing is further back than normal and it required significantly more effort to pull it forward.
