Very interested in this story. Not many engines get saved once they develop rod knock, so this will be hopefully an exciting read!

Did you have a chance to get the compression numbers?

Update....Waited a couple weeks for bearings to show up. Got them installed today, polished crank with 1500 grit and checked clearances with plasti-gauge. Put everything back together, fired her up and drove her home. Got back to my place and there was still no knock. Usually after a 30 minute drive the knock would show up. Still forgot to do a compression check because I was excited/nervous to get it back on the road. Guess now I'm just going to drive it and hope the problem is gone for good.

Before the knock developed I had purchased some ap2 valve retainers and new valve seals. Will try to install those parts and adjust the valves in a week or 2. Then hopefully I can work on the body of this clapped out s2k. Thanks for all the input!

I change the oil and oil filter early after any engine work to remove any break-in stuff. In around 500-1000 miles.

That's my routine.

Wow! everyone says that due to the tight tolerances of these engine, once they are knocking the block is toasted... and there you have it, a bit of sanding with the 1500 grit and it's back on the road!

How's it running so far?

So far so good! I’ve only put about 300 miles on it so far. But the knock hasn’t returned. I’ve been taking it super easy on the car. Haven’t revved it high enough to hit VTEC any. Just picked up an ap2 valve cover, so this weekend I will probably be doing valve stem seals, lash adjustment, and its first oil change since the new bearings went in.

No what people say toasts the block is scored cylinders and that is true. You can replace bad bearings if not too far gone and if it has not already caused other issues
