Knock sensor terror
Hi all
After lurking around and reading quite alot of topics ive finally decided to write my first post.
Im a p plater from australia and fell inlove with s2000 the moment i saw them. After searching far and wide i found 2 minutes drive from work.
Ive been having a blast and enjoying the s2000 life. So far ive been repairing/replacing all the things wrong with the car (old faded head light, paint work, faded interior leather and alot of electrical problems.
Last month my problem began. I was on the way to work one morning when i put my car into vtec and immediately the engine choked. Putting the cluth in and dropping the revs the car drove fine again.
I took her into honda to get checked and they told me that it was a faulty knock sensor. I bit the bullet and orded a genuine knock sensor and got it replaced. After that things went back to normal until yesterday driving to work and guess what? The car choked at vtec the exact same thing as before.
So my question is there any known problems that kills knock sensors such as shorts? As far as ive read on here replacing the knock sensor with genuine should resolve the problem. Any advice would be appreciated

Do you have any codes?
When my knock sensor broke I would get a CEL after a good amount of miles.
Another thing that can cause VTEC to choke is not building enough oil pressure. This can be caused by running the car with low oil. It has happened to me a few times. If you haven't already check your oil dipstick.

I dont personally have the codes but honda did get them when they looked over the vehicle. I have never had a cel light. As for oil it did get down lown once when i originaly had the car. (Didnt realise how much oil ap1 burns). The only other thing i can mention a few days ago i forgot to put the oil cap back on after topping up only drove about 30ks tho before i realised.

Your not hitting the safety vtec cut off in the mornings before the car is up to temp are you? You need 2 bars showing on the dash before vtec will operate on an ap1. If not up to temp, the engine will hit a hard rev limiter which is very abrupt and startling to the unaware. Every new owner not in the know usually figures this out at some point.
If you didn't get a cel previously for a failed knock sensor, then chances are good that it wasn't bad and neither is your current one. The knock sensor is not a common failure point on this car.

no i never push the car before it gets to three bars. its always while the engine is at three bars.
But that doesnt make sense if they replaced it and i worked for a month. replacing it fixed it if only for a little while.

I would remove vtec valve and check filter screen for debris. This would limit oil pressure to engage vtec.
I also doubt you had a bad knock sensor. Original problem is still present. That the issue appeared to go away is just coincidence. I expect your symptoms are intermittent.
Correct diagnosis is the most critical aspect of a successful outcome, whether you are fixing a car or healing a person. Yet in both fields its a lost art that the leaders in these fields dont seem to recognize is lacking...
