Default L on dipstick

ok i'm a newbie and just got my S2000 3 days ago from the dealership. its a 02 model. i havent abused the car eversince i got it and still drives like a grandma on the S2. i checked on the oil dipstick today after warming it up and the oil is at the L level. should i refill oil until H? what oil should i use? the oil is still clear so i assume the dealer changed the oil already. is it safer for me to have an oil change just to be sure? the car has 42,000 miles by the way. like i said i'm a newbie to the S2K world so any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

On the dip stick L is low and H means High.

You want your oil level to be on H... You can fill up to H with any 10w30 oil, go back to the dealership and tell them to give you a oil change because there was no oil in my car when I got home.

remember to check your oil level frequently ... the manual suggests at every fill-up

You also don't want to check your oil after the engine has been running. You actually want to wait for all the oil to drip down into the pan to get an accurate reading. I usually check my oil in the morning before starting the car.

Don't fill above the H, though. And remember to wipe off your dipstick first before checking your oil level.

not necessarily.. anywhere between the L and H is theoretically fine for the engine. personally I don't want it to go below two X's from the L, but I also don't fill it up to the H. If you're at the L, I would add 3/4 qt 10w30 and be on my merry way.

I thought most people said it should be read when warm

transmissions are warm, and engines are checked cold.

I think our oil levels should be checked while the car is warm. Hence the "check at every fillup" instruction.

I agree!! wait a few minutes after the engine is off then check your oil and do it a couple times too make sure its reading right!! just like doing an oil change!!
