Lost 5th gear
I’m new to this website and forum, but I need some help. I have a 2000 with 31,000 miles. The beginning of summer 1st and 2nd started grinding, my BF made some adjustments and fixed that. Then like a month later 5th went and it was slipping out of 6th. Now 6th is fine, but I still don’t have 5th. My boyfriend, whom is a mechanic (diesel mechanic) thinks I need a rebuild. I really don’t think I do, mainly because of the low mileage and the fact that I don’t beat it, or race it. Why the hell would I need a tranny rebuild at 30k miles?!
What did he do? If you're transmission is grinding check clutch hydraulics and transmission fluid first. If the master is leaking or there's air in the line you will grind. If your transmission fluid is really old shifting gets hard and it will wear out the synchros quickly, especially the brass ones on the AP1.

You know if the clutch has OEM parts in it? If so... then have your BF change the gear oil, to OEM Honda MTF or Royal Purple Synchromax. Then, pray this works.
If not, could be an internal issue with the transmission.

Note the reference to "skip shifting" in the link. That means skipping gears on the way up or down. This is not being kind to the gearbox. On a race track you may have to abuse the gearbox for a second or two drop in lap time -- but you're already abusing the whole car,. On the street it was long ago recommended to me to engage every gear. As far as I know it's not necessary to let the clutch out just go into the next gear and work your way up or down.
