Black streaks.... yes.

Bought the car as a repo a few months ago, so I don't know its history. I presume it was beat to hell which is why I'm breathing some life back into it and restoring it to the way Honda originally intended it to be

Anywho.. is there a good thread posted somewhere listing shops that specialize in rebuilding F20/22 motors? I'm in Chicago and would prefer a local shop. Been searching through the forums, found a couple names but haven't come across any shops that are familiar with the s2k motor specifically. I'd like the block to remain all stock if possible.

Streaks are as wide as the piston skirt, and appear black yes?

Noises can be hard over the internet sometimes, but high compression in #4 was a dead giveaway.

did you do any high spped runs? was the car ever supercharged or turbo?
Hi Billman,

Can you tell me what would cause this? Prolonged periods of high revs (ie, top speed runs)? Low on oil? I am asking because i have a very early AP1 MY00 #220 and would like to prevent this. I only have around 20k miles on my car so i want to catch this early as i do plan on tracking my car. I already have the updated 4 hole banjo bolt and will install it in the near future. Anything else i need to do?

I'm also having a very similar loud knocking sound coming from my AP2 with only 33k miles. The weird part is that it goes away after its warmed up. I've already changed the tct (honda oem) and done a valve adjustment. One thing I noticed was the cylinder 1 exhaust valves were extremely tight to the point that the feeler could not get in there.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance .

According to Honda, cold start knock for 2-3 minutes is perfectly normal and has to do with the oil that's drained from the walls. Once it's warmed up, the tolerances become tighter and once oil has had a chance to run thoroughly through the motor, the piston slap should dissipate.

Here is a sound sample during a cold start. It gets ugly at 1:30. I sometimes wonder if its going to make it down the driveway

This is a sample after it had warmed up. The knocking has diminished but still audible.

What do you guys think it is?

Cylinder scoring is not due to low oil. It happens from high piston temps or lubrication, likely due to the old style oil jet bolts.

With low oil, the rod bearings will be the first to go.

4DCurvs, I can't here anything definitive in your vids. I would be very surprised to see a scored cyl in your car, as it's a 2004.

Bill, Thanks for your input.

I've taken my car to a couple of shops and they also can't definitively tell me what it is. Most likely piston slap and nothing can really be done about it. The one thing is calms my mind is the it does go away once warmed and it runs like champ. It still quite embarrassing when I turn her on and she sounds like a diesel.

That noise, in case someone hasn't explained, is caused by too much clearance between the piston skirt and the cylinder wall. The piston is kind of wobbling or rocking back and forth as it moves up and down.
My neon has been doing this for years and although the noise used to go away once warm, it doesnt any more. Its a terrible noise when its cold out.
