Unhappy Low compression

okay, so I did a compression test on my 2002 s2000, she’s got about 150k on the clock, so I wanted to do a compression test (I just bought the car not that long ago) so I drove the S2 to auto zone and rented a compression tester. When I got back home the car was warmed up and so I started testing the comp. my numbers were (cyl. 1-60 cyl. 2-55 cyl. 3-60 cyl. 4-65) and I did the test 3 different times and the numbers stayed the same. I also poured a little bit of oil in my combustion chamber so see if it was my piston rings and the number stayed the same as well. I have noticed a power loss since I’ve gotten the car but not enough for my engine to be reading such low numbers. I feel like the car wouldn’t run right if the comp was that low. I also have a ticking in my head that I’m pretty sure is my valves but i don’t know if valves could cause low comp! Mahalo

Try a different gauge.

Overly tight valves can cause low compression numbers by not closing fully and allowing pressure to bleed off. If those numbers were accurate, I don't think your car would be running. Make sure your battery is cranking hard and maybe try a new tester. Also make sure that the throttle is held wide open and I believe the thing to do on this car is to unplug injectors. Search it on the forum but I'm pretty sure that's the recommendation so your cylinder walls aren't fuel washed. I'd get the valves adjusted first, see if that helps the noise and then go for an accurate compression test #. If your valves were tight enough to allow compression to leak out, I think you'd be at risk of burning a valve over the longer run. Definitely worth checking out at that mileage.
