Good thread to follow

I'm not trying to steal this thread, just add a question.

Would turning one wheel by hand generate enough force to make the Torsen principle work?

You might not want to listen to me anymore, since I was already wrong once in this thread, but I'm tending to think not. It's a torque sensing device and I don't think a person using only his own strength could turn a single wheel hard enough, quick enough or fast enough to make the LSD lock. If this could be done, would we not see both wheels begin to turn in the same direction?

Just do a burnout.. If you leave 2 black lines your LSD is fine!

Isn't the diff already somewhat locked? And I agree you would have to put forth a bunch of force to get the diff to actually slip.

One tire would need to be kept stationary while trying to turn the other one.

Just jack up one of the back wheels while in gear and see if you can rotate the tire in the air.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm

Gives a good, east-to-follow, full-of-pictures explanation. Pay particular notice to the Torsen section.

Just did it. Jacked up only one side, ebrake off, in first gear. The wheel off the ground will NOT turn. The diff is locked.

I think you should become our resident rear diff guy.

yep, did it earlier...with both tires in the air, in gear, each wheel spun the other in the opposite direction, and with one tire on the ground. worked exactly as explained!

LOL I don't know about that.

It's one of those "I know a little about a lot and a lot about a little" type deals.

Whew! When I read the title to this thread, I thought it must be about limited slip differentials.

But on reading all of it (and seeing that even xviper got confused) I'm pretty sure that it's about that other LSD.

I seem to remember all sorts of things going around all which ways...
