Default Mechanical Over-rev

Hello all,

I recently over-reved my engine when I missed the 3rd to 4th shift. (money shift?) I went into second gear briefly (not sure how many seconds) at 71 MPH and my tires locked up (briefly) I shifted from 3rd to 2nd at about 8000 RPMs. I am certain about the speed and RPMs.

The engine feels and pulls as strong as before and I don't have any unfamiliar noises at idle like ticking.

My question is what is the maximum speed that 2nd can handle? Or better yet what would the engine RPMs be if you went into 2nd gear at 71 MPH.

I am going to pull my valve cover tomorrow to check my retainers and keepers but is the there anything else I should do? Should I take it to the dealer and have them inspect the valvetrain and clearance? Also, does anyone in the Metro DC area know of a good S2000 mechanic?

Thanks for anyone who has any advice.

This has been done time and time again and the question has been asked many times. The final conclusion is that there is no conclusion about the condition of your car. Only a detailed inspection can answer this and in some cases, time will reveal all.

2nd gear in an '05 is good for 56.5 mph. If you slammed it into 2nd at 71 mph (and keep in mind that our speedo has a slight lag to it so your actually speed may have been higher), the engine speed could have gone as high as 10,000 rpm.

10,000 RPM = Cash Money.

I did the same thing twice due to my careless mistake...

I took my car to the dealer, they opened the valve cover and everything checked okay. They replaced the valve cover gasket during the process.

When I did this I had a similar result. Nothing happened... Or so I thought.

I was NA when I miss-shifted, same type of deal, wheels locking, yada yada.

Everything was fine for the next 6000 miles... Then I went FI.

Started off with a stock (mostly) Comptech setup and the rings blew when I hit VTEC. I didn't push it hard, no crazy stuff. I'm fairly certain that the rings were in some way damaged by the mis-shift but they were able to hold under NA but not under FI.

The fact that you broke traction is a good sign Less chance for damage...

Because you don't force your engine to rev as high due to the fact that the tires lost traction (Mechanical overrevs are because of how fast your car is going).

Thanks for the replies.

I was wondering does anyone know the tightening sequence for the valve cover. I saw a pic on this forum a while back but I can't find it now. I have ordered a Helms manual but it won't get it till next week. Also where can you buy a dental mirror?

Thanks
