Default Mechanical over rev

Hello fellow s2k owners

The story is that I downshifted instead of upshift at 8500 rpm from 3rd to 2nd. Engine started idling funny immediately and check engine light came on short after. I took it to a shop right away and was told that cylinder 1 has 0 compression after a compression test.I drive an 02 AP1. I also read that I probably cracked my retainers and bent my valves. They suggested that I swap the engine which would cost about $5000-$6000. Now I need some advice on what I should do with the car. Do I need a new engine? Or is there a better solution?

Thanks in advance, I know it's my stupid mistake so please don't flame.

Step one, pull the head and review the damage. Only then can you see if you need to replace the block and head instead of just replacing a few valves.

Thanks for the quick reply. I lack the skilled eye to inspect what is damaged. I can only rely on the shop's word right now. Although they haven't told me anything besides that cylinder 1 has 0 compression.. Can you educate me on what to look for? And how to determine if I do need a new head and block?

All you will need is some exhaust valves, and some intake retainers.

It makes me sick how todays parts changers make a big deal out of nothing.

If you were near me I'd do it while you wait, under 900 bucks, and it would be like brand new.

Your engine is fine.

The valves will have made piston contact. The pistons will have light blems that can be sanded smooth by hand in about 3 minutes to do all 4 pistons.

If you have reasonable mechanical abilty, pull the head yourself.

I find it best to leave the intake in place. there are so many hoses underneath it, it will just sit there in place. Like so:
