Default Mis-shift w/ weird smell

So I was coming home from work just 30min ago, I was coming down the hill, trying to down shift from 5th to 4th. So I accident shift from 5th to 2nd, I notice that it wont go in. I looked down and figure I might have mis-shift, so I went back up to 3rd(**note at the same time, my foot was off the gas and was on the brake already) while it went into 3rd, I also notice my RPM was at 8k-8.5k.... which right away I try to put it back on 4th, then it went normal. All this time I remember going around 40-45mph.

Before coming to a red light stop I notice a weird smell, now the question to you guys. What can that smell be and did I hurt my car really bad that I need to bring it to the dealer.

Yea and I been myself and praying that nothing is wrong with the engine or the tran. So now I come to you guys for help.

Maybe you just shit your pants a little when you almost blew your car up.

Oh and uhhhh.... If you were going 40-45 there is no way in hell that your engine was spinning @ 8k in 3rd gear... unless of course you have 6.77 final drive installed.

If you didnt put it into gear then you never shifted at all. So how could you of mis-shifted? Your cars fine, you didnt mis-shift.

A mis-shift is when lets say your shifting from 3-4 at redline and you go into 2nd instead of 4th. Rpms would go up to 10k+ and at that rate the valves cant close fast enough before being struck by the piston. That bends the valves and cause your car to not have any compression in the cylinder of whichever valve was bent. Sometimes in serious cases all cylinders wont have compression. The car would idle like absolute crap and have no power what so ever.

Like was already mentioned 40-45mph is like around 6k in 2nd gear so theres no way you would be at 8k in 3rd gear. I would be very careful as it sounds your sort of new to a manual car. Make sure you rev match every time you downshift.

Im guessing the smell is the clutch.

funny... when i was new to manual with my MR2, i never experienced this smell. but it happened to me a couple times in the S. i dun like it... and i dun plan to repeat it.

sounds like your clutch was getting a beating with your incident.
you should be fine since, from what you described, you didn't mis-shift.
