Default Misfiring

MY 03'
Completely stock vehicle.
79,5xx

Problem:

CEL came on, had codes checked P301 & P302.
Let engine cool, checked spark plugs looks normal for mileage. Gap .070
I swapped the coils and cleared CEL.
CEL came back codes now read P300 & P304.

I'm thinking I need to buy 2 coils. Any other suggestions? Should I test further? CEL started blinking on the way back to the home. It was smoking out the exhaust smelled like my cat was burning up, sound normal?

All help and criticism appreciated, thanks in advance.

Sounds like a good bet. You could always try swapping one more time and see if CELs moved again. That would clinch it.

Injectors if it doesn't help your problem.

Good way to check coils is let the car idle and unplug each coil one at a time while it is idling, if the motor bogs down when you unplug it the coil is good but if nothing changes when you unplug it you have a bad coil. This is how I diagnosed my misfire

Also correct me if im wrong but your plug gap is .070?? I thought it was supposed to be gapped anywhere between .039 and .043?

I'll try that out Friday when I got time to play with it again. And yes the gap is .039 - 0.44 for brand new plugs. I've got 79,xxx miles on my s2 and its 6 years old. Over time it will burn out and the gap will widen. Thanks for everything.

Maybe it's time for new plugs, then. You could try a set of copper plugs in the meantime for $10 total and see if that corrects the problem...
