I posted the question on another thread and I will again. Are you simply basing your slams and misinformation regarding this oil on hearsay?

I've never had any problems with Mobil or Mobil 1. If you can afford it, I say go w/ Mobil 1.

Thanks for the clarification. I also have torn down engines and found deposits.. in every case it was poor practice (very long intervals between changes.. sometimes years!) with conventional oil. I don

I think Mobil 1 was first reviewed in '75 and was on the streets in '76.

Amsoil was introduced in 1972 as the first API approved Synthetic motor oil. They remind me a little of Zaino - they have a good product and a good business and don't care what you think of their marketing ways.

Any API SJ premium motor oil when changed regularly is very comparable to any other.

To say Castrol is not good oil is a very poor statement to be making to this board.

What many people forget is that most of the wear that happens to your engine is during cold weather starts. Conventional oils turn thick like mollasses and don't flow well until they warm up a bit. Synthetics, and for my money Mobil 1 is the best, flow significantly better than conventional oil under these conditions. You build oil pressure much sooner. Building oil pressure sooner equates to less wear on your vital engine parts. Oil can't lubricate correctly if it can't flow to where it is needed.

Another situation where it could save your engine is if for some reason you severely overheat your engine. Conventional oil will break down much sooner. Synthetics buy you some time for an extra margin of safety. This margin could be the difference between a blown engine or not.

These two reasons are enough justification for me. But just to add a little extra, they do lubricate better and you may pick up one to two MPG. You may even pick up a HP or two. The Williams F1 team considered Mobil 1 their secret weapon when it was first being developed for them. They gained significant HP.

I was wondering if anyone really thinks its worth the $4.50 a quart or is it just another marketing ploy.
It's not worth $4.50 a quart when Costco is selling it for $3.50 per.

The main thing is to use an SAE oil with weight appropriate for your driving conditions and to change it regularly. You can't do any better than that, but you can certainly spend more...
Prove it.

I can prove Mobil 1 flows faster easy enough.
Next real cold day start a car with an oil pressure gauge and see how long it takes to build pressure. Put Mobil 1 in and on an equally cold day, start the car and watch how much sooner you get oil pressure. Those are real differences.
