Parts are ordered -- $900 worth. I managed to break the knock sensor with one of the chains on the engine hoist, a $110 mistake , and I'll be replacing the clutch disc and a few other "while it's apart" kind of things...

You've got some great documentation here. If I were you, I would pursue getting the oil pan manufacturer to take care of the bill on this one.
I had an auto parts store for many years, and with the proper documentation, and a legitimate claim, you would be surprised at what can be covered.
Save all of the replaced, and damaged parts, and just keep documenting. Good luck.

^ I agree. It would be worth your time to pursue this as much as possible. What brand was the oil pan?

It was a TC Design oilpan. At my request, Tony posted a thread over in the Racing and Competition forum and asked everyone to check their pans annually for broken baffles. He replaced the failed pan and has offered discounts on parts, but that means spending more money with him, and I'm not sure I want to go down that road.

Good on you for doing it yourself.

I recently did the same with the help of Slow and Chris_Barry and it's a terrifying/exhilarating experience. The first time you fire her up cross as many digits as possible. The first time you take her to 9K pray to the gods of VTEC.

With the crank get her polished and ask the shop for specs. Mine was a very light polish so larger bearing were not required.

Good luck and make sure you have somebody there with experience when you put her back together.

Also, while she's in bit perhaps consider a 2 or 3mm headgasket.

I have no plans to boost this motor, so I'm just going back with a completely stock build. Care to share any potential stumbling blocks that I should look out for?

I have seen this type of oil starvation failure before. I would recommend you have the crankshaft checked for trueness. Sometimes they can bow a few thou. You cannot see it, however a dial bore gauge will let you know.

I would also replace the rings while you are in there, so you get the most life on this motor after it goes back together.
