Default Multiple CEL codes 0300-0304

Hello everyone,

Canadian 2002 Blue S2K with approx 57k miles /91k km's. Fully stock.

Never had an issues with the car and a few weeks ago the CEL came on with a few codes. 0300, 0301, 0304. Used a friends OBD2 machine to read codes and reset. The engine ran fine for a few weeks with no issues. Just the other day the CEL came back on a few times and has the following codes after 2 resets. 0300 0301 0302 0304 1399 1410.

A mechanically inclined friend mentioned the coil packs and I have done a little research on the forums. How hard of a fix is this for a rookie?

The car had a major service at the 44k mile range which included compression test, new plugs, throttle body clean, all fluids etc. I believe the valves were also adjusted at that time. Has run 100% up until last month and I drive the car fairly mild and don't spend too much time in VTEC mode.

Taking the S2000 and my Honda Pilot to a good dealer in Calgary for some minor service this week. I would really appreciate some help on the CEL codes if possible to try and avoid some unnecessary diagnostic fee's. Any questions that I can answer to assist please let me know.

Many thanks to all in advance,

Evan

Make sure the plugs are tightened properly, 22-24 ft lbs plus a tug to make sure they're tight. If they're not that's your problem right there, if not, then coil packs, and fuel injectors would be my next step.

Can you hear your exhaust popping? If so, you can swap coils/injectors with another s2000 and see if the exhaust smoothens out. Swap the coils first, then the injectors.

0300 means multiple cylinder misfires. 0301 is cyl 1 misfire 0302 is cyl 2 misfire and so on. Changing coilpack is extremely simple. Is it running rough?

Hi! Thanks for the assistance. I am in the process of looking at a few You Tube videos on coilpack changes. As for the engine itself wither the CEL is on or not the engine is running smooth. Once the CEL does come on there is a noticeable drop in performance and fuel economy though.

Would you recommend me changing all 4 coilplugs?

Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for your assistance. The exhaust sounds fine and the engine runs smooth. I might attempt to do the coils myself and then go from there.

Thanks!

I hope whoever installed the plugs didn't try to re-gap them.

I would try to track it down before throwing money at it. Coils and injectors are pretty pricy. 4 new injectors cost me over 400 dollars. You can get the injectors flow tested to rule them out then move on to coils.

Could this be primary sensor related? I only ask because Op stated when the cel is reset car runs fine until cel comes on then notices mpg going down and lack of performance

Changing the coils is easier than finding the gas release cap for the first time.

1. Unscrew the coil cover on top of the engine. (The black thing that says "Honda DOHC VTEC"). This is held on by four little screws and one big one.

2. Underneath you'll see the four coils which is held in place by 1 screw. Unplug the coil, unscrew the screw, and pull the coil out. Just don't go crazy with the torque when you reinstall.
