The bendix pin seems to be sticking and doesn't retract enough on start up, it usually sounds like a high pitched shriek. If that is the issue it won't cause any catastrophic failure but the noise would be enough for me to replace it.

I have the same noise occasionally on first start. Have to replace the starter to fix the issue?

You can either replace the starter or take apart the starter and clean/grease it, which is what I did to fix it

Considering the amount of work to get to the starter, I'd just replace it with OEM straight up.

Normal, though embarrassing S2k noise when weather is very cold. A new or cleaned starter will lessen the occurance, but it can still happen, and will eventually return.

The risk of doing nothing is almost nil, and labor and expense if replacing it high. Only and until it starts happening even when weather is not especially cold, no needto take any action.

I had this issue on my 2005 with 114K. At first, I could tolerate it, but then I became irritated that it would occur on almost every startup.

I saw an OEM Honda starter listed in the classifieds here and bought it. I elected to install it myself, as I did not trust a shop to do this with the knock sensor being so close. Definitely a manageable job; just need to take it slow to not damage the knock sensor.

Oh, and yes, starter screech went away.

Exactly. When it starts happening most of the time, needs to be addressed:

My 2009 with 74K never had an issue. I read this thread last week and what happens? I started it up and heard the gear sound for a moment after the engine started. Drove it and it did not do it again. Then yesterday starting it up for the coolant change it did it again.

Maybe if I ignore the problem it will go away.
