Talking MY00 45k synchros dying

Just as the title says.

Replaced fluid with Honda MTF [2nd formula] 2k miles ago along with a moddiction shift knob and MFactory megnetic plug.

I grind 2nd occasionally, mostly in casual driving. The shifter seems to simply go into "uncharted" territory if I don't pay it special attention.

That was until yesterday when I drove the car, once it fully warmed up I started getting baby grinds going into 2nd and only from 1st. From 3rd to 2nd no issues. Drove it today as well and symptom reoccured once the car warmed up. Shifts fine when cold.

I don't skip gears ever, 99% of the time I downshift and rev-match all the way to second before I stop [just a habit].

I switched the shift knob to a voodoo knob and a stock ap1 knob. Problem persists.

The slower I shift the worse the grind gets. Instead of a baby grind i'll feel teeth trying to interlock.

FRIDAY Oct 22nd

I'll put in a 50-50 mix of Honda MTF and Amsoil MTF and report back. Until then DOUBLE-CLUTCH til my leg gives out.

Questions:

1. What parts are needed to put in a AP2 trans aside from a AP2 driveshaft connector?

2. I've been told by a crew chief that successfully replacing synchros is impossible without proper training no matter how mechanically inclined one is. Can anybody that has replaced gears or synchros attest to this? PLEASE NO OPINIONS, don't mean to be disrespectful but they simply don't cut it or help in any way when it comes to actual work.

I will post pictures of everything as I do the work. All you MY00 owners chime in if you had this issue. It might help me and numerous others in this community down the road

Thank you for looking at this, thanks even more if you gave a useful reply.

Hey rocket, I have an 01, built in 00 so I should be in the same boat. Are you 100% sure its the synchros? Are the shifts also notchy/grindy in the higher RPMS? or is it only during "cruising" ? The s2000 transmission is known for its notchyness when its lower RPMS/slow shifts.

My s2000 likes higher RPM shifts, but it does "crunch" into gears if you dont pause between shifts. I hear you on the "slow shift" part, it does feel worse.

I found if I go from 1->2 at around 3K rpms with no DC it shifts smoothly (decent shift speed, not slow).

If i go 1->2 at 4K, and I DC it goes in smoothly

If I go from 1->2 at 4K, and I give it a slight ause: it also shifts smoothly. Its not the synchros though, its just the transmission.

Grind is audible and transmitted through the shifter as well.

It's what I'd call a baby grind at lower RPMS [2-3k], 4-5k it's a grind, 6k it's a grind like i used to get if my foot was faster than my hand, in other words a serious grind.

With proper pressure on the shift lever 50% of the time it won't grind at 2k. Above that it will always grind, the slower the shift the longer and prolonged the grind gets.

The gearbox has never done this before, it's not a normal trans operation.

Is your crunch audible? As in defined by a characteristic low pressure gear grind? Or is it simply transmitted through the shifter without a sound coming from underneath the chassis

My crunch is audible, sometimes, if I shift too slow. If I get the timing, shift speed perfect, there is no noise or grinds. Normally when I'm driving I feel a little resistance going into 2nd gear.

A few friends with s2000s have driven my car and they dont notice a difference with their cars. Since you changed your trans fluid to a good one, have you also checked your slave and master cylinders for your clutch?

Since you say its happening at 6K or more, it could very well be the synchros. I don't have any experience with that so maybe someone else can chime in!

The thing is it's hard to ruin a synchro in 45K of driving. This isn't worn out, it would be failing.

I've found on my 04 that I baby it into 2nd all the time. It's the only gear with a problem. Well that's not true sometimes while rolling I'll buzz first even with the clutch all the way down.

Tranny is funky.

How did you go about replacing gears. Drop trans, pull out shafts, press out needed gears? Whatbwas the hardest part?

Sounds like everyone in this thread needs to bleed their clutch fluid.

This and make sure your CMC is still good.

No, depending on how you shift and how often you change the fluid 40k is not long at all particularly with the non-carbon. Take 1 sec and search google for everyone else with a 6 speed and their experience with synchros.
