Default MY04+ with V2

OK, here's the scoop:

it's been raining quite a bit here in florida and my car is a daily. I've got an AEM v2, and i have to park it outside at work. there's no garage.

I was gingerly driving home after a heavy rain, i waited until the roads were mostly dry and the car performed fine until i had to merge on i-95, the engine burped at about 5k RPM, the engine light came on, the car sputtered but never stalled. I drove all the way home and kept the engine at low revs.

The car was fine the next morning, drove to work. thought to myself, well that was a close call, V-tec no problem. A brief shower in the afternoon today, driving home on 95, upon a hard acceleration engine burps again, at about 5k. no engine light, no stall. drive home slowly and safely. Cursing and grinding my teeth. now i know i've got a problem.

Drain the oil, checked it for cloudiness and found nothing. replaced the oil and tested the car: full power, full v-tec, all fun, no problems at all.

i checked the the rain gutters under the hood. this is what i found:

I plugged both holes #1 and #2 as advised upon installing the intake. After some time i figured out that this doesn't help. in fact, i discovered that in the 04+ it makes things dramatically worse. you see when you plug the second hole water will go towards the headlight, hole # 3. this is the hole that leads directly over the intake itself, thus soaking the filter. So if you plug holes #1 and #2 you are sending water where you don't want it to go. a big mistake. you need to plug all three holes to be effective. i imagine that this must only be for MY 04+.

now if you could help me i'd be thankful.

Do i need to do a compression test? some have told me to do so, but the cars feels fine, runs good and idles perfectly. i really don't think i cracked the block or anything.

I would like to to do a computer diagnostic. But i don't know how, and when i do, i don't know what the codes would mean. can anyone give me a link or some advice on how this is done?

I have the same setup as you and think I better get an umbrella! Except this gives me a good reason to drive the Integra when it rains...

As far as I know, you only have codes to read when the CEL is on... But you can go to Autozone to find out what they are if you do have them...

If you have a good mechanic(not the dealer!), maybe you can have them check things out. I think it's supposed to be under $100 to do a compression test and a leakdown test. You also might be able to buy the tools for less than that...

Try something like this to project the intake for leaking water.

You can probably make your own too.

thanks guys, i'm well aware of the umbrella.

But after i plugged all three holes, no water drips from the gutters into the intake. you just have to plug all three, that was my problem. i can feel the filter (i cut out the black section of my bumper) and if it get's wet during the next rain, i'll put an umbrella in.

How do i activate the computer diagnostic?

did the cel light just go out or did you reset it? I don't think you'll be able to retrieve the code if it's not on, but for future ref, you can hit up a parts store and they'll tell you what code you threw. From there, you can post the code here or search the faqs to check for yourself. I know on the Integra w/ ob2 you could check the code at home by putting a jumper in the line and getting the code from the resulting flashing lights, but I've never attempted nor looked into doing that on the s2k. Anyways, you can pick up a compression tester from parts store and follow the instructions. If I remember, take the spark plug cover off, remove spark plug, twist in to and have a friend crank engine and you read the gauge. While you're there, might as well make sure no water is in the spark plug area

I would go ahead and install an umbrella, it's another safety net and it's quick and cheap to do. Me personally, I wouldn't worry too much if the car starts and everything seems normal. People have had instances where it bit them later like 20-30kmiles down the road, but the major concern is if the car got soaked, idle would be horrible if it cranks

Did you take the filter off and check the elbo down there? I'd be willing to bet you've got some water laying in there.

sorta, i'll be working on the car today so i'll do a more thorough check. i know there was water in there, whether or not water is in there now, i don't know.

but yep, that would cause the burp.
