Default Need help...ringing noice at 4200 RPM

Recently my S has ben acting up....

I have noticed a very subtle ringing noise. Specifically when deceleration, the ringing occurs at approx. 4000 - 4200 RPM. When accelerating the ringing sound exists from approx. 4000 - 9000 RPM.

The ringing noise disappears when I hold down the transmission shifter. When I release the shifter the same symptoms occur.

My S only has 14000 miles on it. As of now I am thinking it might have something to do with the transmission bushings. Any other suggestions as to what might be causing this annoying noise..... I feel like I'm driving a tin can..........

Besides the ringing noise, the car performance normally. Is this something that I should be worried about?

its an easy fix. i posted something about this a long time ago but the search function is not working. Basically what you need to do is remove the shifter and grease (use Honda Urea Grease) the nylon cap and bushings. What happens is the cap starts vibrating agains the shifter causing it to ring. Takes about 30 minutes to do.

I have the same problem, but I don't understand your instructions.

Any chance you could post pictures or write something for a dummy?

It troubled me so much because at first I thought it was pinging, but there was no evidence of pinging...

Do you have a helms? it will show you how to remove your shifter which is quite easy. Basically you will need to remove the center console and shifter. There are 3 bolts that holds the shifter in place. Pull the shifter completely out and you will notice a nylon cap on the bottom of shifter. Use the UREA grease on the nylon pieces, it keeps them from vibrating against the shifter. As soon as the search function is working I will find my original post, It has detailed insttructions on what to do.

No, no helms... We don't get Helms manuals here in Australia.

When I take off the centre console, I have the little leather boot thing. I can remove that. Is the nylon cap under there?

I might just wait till search works again.

Thanks for your help though.

If you can wait until the search function works again, i will find my post. The leather boot and console will come off in one piece, you need to remove the shift knob though.

Sunder,

I would recommend you get a service manual from your local Honda dealer. It is very descriptive and is probably the best manual a car owner could ever have.

Service manuals are generally NOT available in countries outside the US. I'm sure someone here could order a USDM one and send it, which would be better than nothing.

The procedure if you don't follow the instructions posted here is probably something you should leave to the dealer. The center console cover will need to be removed, then the shifter assembly unbolted, removed, regreased, and reinstalled. Not difficult, but it probably isn't fun for a total novice.
