do you have your window locks on, the switch near the window controls? I know putting your top down will bypass the lock, but will prevent you moving the window up and down still. sorry if this sounds patronizing, but seems like something that can be overlooked

I am thinking it's the lock switch on the driver door, which will be the most frustrating thing in the world since he took the time to wire up the motor directly.

You checked that it was set to "off"? Or did you check it with a meter to make sure it worked properly?

bad relay? hence it works when jumped. not sure how the window relay looks like or how its wired.

look for the # 8 relay (20A) located under dash fuse/relay box.

Did you check i your switch works on his car?
