There's been a lot of questions about the Rev Limter and bending valves lately. So I would like to avoid some misconceptions about the rev limter and what it does.

I'd like some feedback for corrections, additions, deletions and more information if you have it.

Very nice writeup! The only thing I'd nitpick is the first sentence, "The 'Rev Limiter' does only that: it limits the revs of the eninge" -- which, as you go on to explain, isn't true under all circumstances. Maybe something more like this?:

"The 'Rev Limiter' is just a fuel/spark algorithm used by the ECU to help prevent over-revving the engine, but it isn't all the protection you might hope it to be."

Then leave the rest as is.

Cheers,
John

suggestion

However, the wheels, transmission and engine are all engaged and the engine will rev to what it wants and serious engine damage can occur.

Out of context (or in?) that makes little sense. My engine revs based upon throttle or is driven by the wheels but I don't think its 'wants' are a consideration.

Note also that the rev limiter, limit (RPM) is coolant temperature dependent. At lower coolant temperatures it will kick in at 5,000 RPM.
