Default New piston rings.

I've been burning oil for a few months now, well actually i bought the car with the condition it has, but they gave me the ring around.

i took it to a joe the shmo mechanic and they did a diagnosis. did a compression check and a few other things i'm not to aware exactly.

he says my piston rings are gone, and that my lose of power is due to oil build up in the cylinders, which then explains my CEL when i take it into vtec, (misfires on all cylinders) he says the oil has fouled my plugs.

he also said my pressure plate was broken, which i can understand. but heres the problem with my tranny if anyone has any better ideas.
-hard to shift into gear sometimes, especially 1st and reverse.
-grind gears just cruising sometimes out of no where
-the clutch sometimes feels really really soft more so after extended driving.
-the smoothness in my shift is completely gone no matter how hard i try to compensate.

the creditability of this is uncertain so i came here. he says i need a new engine, a new pressure plate which he says will be like 5k for the engine and 1.6k for the tranny. he also says i need to spend 500 on my brakes. (my pads are down to 20%) i dont understand how changing your pads can cost more then 80% of what it should.

any ideas?

and would it be cheaper to just replace my rings, or buy a new short block?

I doubt it is just the rings. The cylinder walls of the block are most likely scorced as well. So the short block it is.

Tear it apart and see. Rings can go south and not harm the cylinder walls at all. We are just guessing at this point.

Did he do a compression and leak down test?

Given the tranny problems it sounds like your car has been abused by the previous owner... I would be willing to bet you would have valve seal problems from over revving before the rings would go out. It would be cheaper to get new rings and a hone if you can get the motor out and apart and back together, but if you are going to pay someone you are closer the cost of the 2.5 short block or even stock.

He said he did a compression test. says my compression is fine. I'm going to be taking it to a place localy that specializes in s2k's so hopefully the rings did go south.

how much does a 2.5l cost? i'm not a rich man lol.

it goes for $5495 + core for the 2.5 or 2.7L but they are not ready for boost, the still working on the boost ready block...
