New Rear Diff
god, this thread is rediculous. get a different car
custom 6th gear is gonna be mad loot. 3.90 rear gear in your car will be retarded for NA.
SOLUTION - cruise at 55-70
RESULT - better fuel economy then cruising at 75+, less volume of sound, you know a lot of the sound is from wind noise, after all car is a vet
, car wont be a turd cruising.
otherwise, trade in on a vette 6MT

Maybe you can start with the simpler things such as putting more sound deadening or insulation between the cabin and the engine (maybe on the firewall). What kind of oil do you use? I'm sure switching from a 0w to a 10w may quiet it down slightly. OEM hardtop is another idea. Louder sound system?
rob-2 is right. no one goes into the FI section and tells the 600+ whp guys that the s2000 is not meant for such power or that the chassis was meant for a different type of experience.
to each his own...

Said there was some light spray on paint or foam that might go against the firewall. I thought about trying that. Still looking into this.
I thought revs might need to be lowered to get the noise down but I think several of you are right, it's the lack of noise damping built into the car.
Anything that's light and easy to install? Recommendations?
Forget changing 6th gear.
Its a set and one of the fixed gears is on the counter shaft.

If you put (IF it fits) an AP2 1:1,208 sec reduction in an AP1 gearbox you'll be hurting 1st - 5th as well - No not true, increasing revs actually!
Then we be getting complaints about the car being sluggish....
Not true either, complaints about more noise!

Seriously: you've allready mentioned it:

I was speaking with a friend who said there might be simpler methods. Like you mentioned.

Dynamat will help. But even if you do everything including the softtop area, trunk and floors under the cabin carpet you'll still have road noise.
An OEM hardtop is the best solution along with dynamat to quiet the car down.
I can tell you that trying to drive the s2000 @ 2500rpms is NOT going to save you MPG. NO NO NO NO NO. You WILL get worse fuel economy. The s2000 takes way too long to accelerate in stop and go traffic if you try and keep it below 2500 rpms. The engine is simple not designed to cruise at that low of an rpm. The cams and intake manifold are designed for TOP end power. NOT low/mid rpm tq like the RSX or TSX or any other family sedan.
It WILL reduce noise, however the engine will probably lug and if it doesn't i'd be surprised. Either way. If you lengthen the gearing by going with an ap1 reduction gear you will end up with longer gears and the car will accelerate slower and feel sluggish.
Assuming the gear would work it would probably be a good mod for a turbo AP2 making 400+whp. Then you'd have the power and tq for low rpm and the longer gearing would be good for traction and top speed.
Another bit of info. The ap2 tranny has a shorter 1-4th and a longer 5th and 6th gear vs the ap1 tranny, but has a shorter seconary reduction gear. So if you did install the ap1 reduction gear you'd get a even longer 5th and 6th, and and your 1-4 would be similar to an ap1. Thus giving you a higher stop speed and a similar 1-4 gear ratio as an ap1.
You'll be slower, but it will give you the effect you want of lowering the cruising rpms in each gear. It will also increase the max mph you'll be able to go in each gear.
Me personally. I am shorting my gearing with 4.57 gears so i'll be faster. F' crusing rpm! lol
