Gentlemen, what beets me, is Honda's intention by publishing an Oil consumption service bulletin to calm the crowds as being something normal.

Suckers! How does the s2000 keep the Low Emissions Rating if it burns all that oil? Where is all that oil going? Why is it normal to burn oil regardless of driving preference? If this was meant to be why not add a bigger oil pan to support enough oil until the next oil change, or even better why not adding a little compartment as 2 stroke engines to put extra oil so that it adds it as needed?

Don't you guys think this was normal it should have been taken care while testing?

I think Honda wants to keep it cool since fixing 15000 engines still on warranty and a reputation to save is worth a little lying.

I am on 18k miles and losing about a quart of oil every 3000 miles. I drive normally except for when I step into VTEC for a couple of minutes, but 90% of the time I am below 6000 RPM.

I say we write a nasty formal letter, run it by a lawyer and send it to Honda with hundreds of signatures requiring action or protection.

I picked up my baby with 14 miles on her, so she would have had to have had some REAL abuse in those 14 miles ot account for oil loss. I generally put in 5.5 quarts with an oil change to get to the top X, and use up the final 0.5 quart halfway through the 3750 mile stretch, sometimes a tad more (I always keep a half quart or more around, just in case).

Help me understand, I can not tell what is normal about your driving. Are you saying you only drive normally when not in V-tec or that your style of driving is mostly under 6000 rpm?

my S2000 has about 6500 miles, and since 3000 has not burned a drop of oil. i drive it VERY hard, mostly tough runs through the twisties, and lots of stop and go and short trips otherwise.

i broke it in very, very gently, so maybe that has something to do with it, or maybe it's just dumb luck. my previous honda, a 2000 prelude sh, also didn't burn any oil at all (although the h22a4 is known for it) until i blew the pistons thanks to boost.

oil consumption on vtec motors is hardly a given.

Thats an incorrect statement actually.

My S2000 only burns 1/2 quart every 3500 miles. My 98 Prelude used to burn 1 quart every 3500 miles. I've found no relationship between driving style (how often do you vtec) and oil burning. One interesting thing I've noticed is that oil burns from MAX to Middle of the dip stick faster than from Middle to MIN. If I don't top off the oil after 3500 miles and keep driving the car to 7000 miles (that's when I get an oil change) , the dip stick is not at MIN but between MIN & Middle. This reminds me, I should check oil in my wife's new accord!

I had the same problem... and honda had no problem working on my car. Never gave me any problem so long as i still had my warranty.

There is this company in Australia called "Nulon" who make teflon mixtures for car engines. They reckon that if you treat your engine with their teflon mixture every 20,000 kilometres, you can drive from Sydney to Melbourne and back with no oil and have no wear additional on your engine. (approximately 2000Km, or 1250 miles)

I used it on my Excel Sprint, but as per Honda's instruction, I have not used it in my S2000.

I can't vouch for the product, but the Excel doesn't get looked after (Oil changes every 20,000km instead of 10,000 as recommended) and the engine is still strong and smooth. Whether this is just because of good engine manufacture (from Hyundai? HA!), good quality oil (Castrol Synthetic), or from the Teflon, I can't comment.

Still... MIght it be worth a $10 bottle every 4 services as a cheap bit of insurance?

I broke my engine in properly and burned about 1/4 qt. during break in and burn maybe 1/3 qt. every 2500 miles. I shift at redline....maybe that's the secret.

I drive my car like its stolen most of the time and I feel like I am wasting my time in checking the oil. There is only one decrease in oil. The decrease is the amount of oil I wipe off the dipstick before I check the level.
