Wasn't it the VTEC buzz in your head you heard? And after some silence your ears got back to 'normal' mode

What engine oil are you using?
How long has it been in there?

It could be the summer heat.
(affecting you, not the car )

i swear the thing was overevved before i got it- i dont know. i stood on the outside of the car and had my wife drive by me in the car- this car is loud. not sure if its mine cause of the mileage (49K) or it was not taken care of well, or the car is just loud (like i swear i hear the pistons going at it) (a noise none of my other cars - including my 02 rsx type s, made)i am taking it in foor ANOTHER valve adjustment and i am going to have them take a look at some of the internals and see if something needs to be replaced.

Biz, these motors are just NOISY! I went through the same paranoia...

Obviously, I'm not saying there's nothing wrong with your car, but if you've already taken it in to a shop, it hasn't thrown any codes, and it feels fine, it just might actually be fine.

Where are you? Maybe someone here can meet up with you to listen. If you're in SoCal, I'd be happy to.

If it's noisy when hot but quiet when cold, doesn't sound like a valve adjustment problem.

I started having similar noises and the best match I found here was timing chain tensioner. A search gave me some good ideas of how to diagnose it further.

I know this may sound stupid, but did you check oil levels around the time of the knocking or shortly after?

Reason being is that I had a similar situation with a friends S, where after a long hard group drive there was a pretty loud knocking from the outside of the car. Checked it out and noticed the drive burned up quite a bit of oil. I added some oil before taking any other steps. Let it cool down and restarted and its been fine since. This was about 3-4 months ago.

Has your car made any noises since? Again, what engine oil are you using?

I really doubt its the timing chain tensioner... I believe that makes more of a rattle than a knock.
