Noticing that there is a pretty loud whining noise coming from the diff only during acceleration. I've also noticed that it started occurring after I changed out the diff fluid to Mobil 1 75w90. I plan on switching it out but would like to get suggestions about other diff fluids out there that would provide better protection. Would using 80w90 be any better?

I don't think its the Mobil 1 causing your Diff to be whine.... Could be a coincidence, but did you put enough of the fluid in? And how long in between changes? I've used Mobil 1 diff fluid since I had my car and never had it made it whine louder.

 

What gear oil were you using before? Did it whine then? If not, then go back to it.

If you don't know what was in there, then you can try a higher viscosity grade of GL-5. I use LE 1605 SAE 110. The diff is pretty quiet in the winter. But come summer, it whines quite a bit between 50-60 MPH when I'm using the throttle lightly. It never whines while accelerating (that I know of) though.

 

Hey Indy do you have anything done to your airbox at all? I get the same whine but it's not coming from the diff it's coming from the airbox. it sounds like the same thing i get. let me know.

 

Do you have an aftermarket LSD? Those usually don't like synthetic, depending on the type.

Nope, just stock diff...looking for something that is maybe a little thicker in weight for extra protection and could be had fairly easily otc or if I must where's the cheapest place to buy le-1605?
