Okay, did the decel test. The sound is still there when it passes by that rpm range in question.

So the injectors might be ruled out now. Argh!
Let us know how your the the valve check did anything.

Mine is the same way, its there on dece when it passes that range, but you got to listen quick as it goes by quickly. I'm leaning towards valve clearance.

Well I got the car back, the valves were within spec and the retainers and keepers all look fine. I trust the mechanic who did the inspection as several local guys recommend him (he's the guy who handles the s2000 at the dealership). They told me it was normal valve noise and it will vary from Honda valvetrains.

As odd as it sounds, lots of members have told me that oil changes can make a difference on the sound of the valves. Well I'd tried that before and it made no difference, but I was using aftermarket filters. As long as I was at the dealer I supervised (thank God I did, they wanted to put in 5w30) their express lube and let them do a quick oil change for the fun of it (up until now I'd done it myself) and have them throw on a Honda PCX filter. I actually do think the noise is even more subtle now. I only drove about 20 miles home though and it was on the interstate. I'll report back more later.

Regardless now that I've had another mechanic inspection (and this time from one I have been told I can trust by the local forum) and had the valve covered pulled and inspectced, I'm willing to give up and just label it as normal valve noise. If I don't I think I'm going to get an ulcer.

ahha, mine is still bugging my, have to turn the radio up not to hear it when the car warms up. Funny that when i drive against a barrier I don't notice it, i can only hear in with the top up and windows up.

When I drive next to a barrier it is very noticeable in the exhaust sounds. This is why I said it almost sounds like a pin-hole exhaust leak. But if you search on the forum, there are TONS of similiar threads. I think this is common for a lot of our motors.

Who knows . . .

this is my theory cuz i have the exact same problem...if you put the stethescope..seriously goto autozone and buy one its 10 freakin dollars so you can hear it yourself....put the stethescope on the fuel injectors...you will literally hear the loudest ticking ever..its retarded...it was hard to locate on my car because what i think is happening is when the hood is open the sound changes...when the hood is closed the noise bounces off the hood and out the bottom of the car. thats why we can hear it so clearly when we pass by other cars/barriers. i'm gonna try some injector cleaner...other than that i'm just gonna swap the injectors for some non oem ones..same flow rating but non oem... i will say that i've seen pics comparing the RC injectors to oem and the RC are like twice as fat...maybe more material will block the noise from inside the injector?? yea well i'll find out...cuz like you guys i'm anal retentive and its tweaking me the f out...
