O2 Sensor/Catalytic Converter Failures
A member and a friend of mine had a secondary O2 sensor failure due to a broken catalytic converter. This doesn't come as any surprise to me but it does to Honda. His claim for warranty coverage was denied and the DSM claims he's never heard of any O2 sensor failures.
If you have had a Check Engine Light condition in which the code was "Secondary O2 Sensor failure" please report it here so I can demonstrate that this non-existant problem does in fact exist and is wide-spread.
If you have had such a failure please report it to this topic:

Thanks!

its simple.
if a warranty part (cat. emissions item) causes a non warranty part ( cat monitor) to fail both parts are replaced under warranty.
this is if the vehicle is out of base warranty. cat is covered under federal emissions warranty. i dont THINK the cat monitor is though.

my downstream O2 sensor died. i only have 42k miles on the car, too.
what's this federal emissions warranty about? do you mean i can get it replaced for free, even if my warranty expired at 36k miles?
because i was just gonna put an O2 simulator in there and put a test pipe in if i had to replace parts, anyway...but if i can stay legal for free, i'll do it.

The Convertor and PCM are covered for 8 years, 80K.
If the Convertor bed broke loose and damaged the sensor, both should be replaced under warranty.
I've seen many threads on this, but haven't seen one fail in person.
yet.

It's covered under warranty so long as the DSM decides it is. They claim abuse because the car has been on the track (HPDE) and therefore refused to cover it. Federal (EPA) law mandates that the manufacturer must warrant the major emissions components for 8 years or 80K miles (major is ECU, Catalytic Converter, OBDII).

My rear O2 sensor went bad at 77,859 miles and I replaced it myself. The sensor seemed to have burnt off; at least that is what I thought. Then just over 80,000 miles, I began to notice a buzz in the exhaust system at 3,000 rpm. At first I thought it was a heat shield, but when I had the car up in the air, all the heat shield were solid. The sound seemed to be coming from inside the convertor. Then I hear about other owners reporting this problem; so I suspect that is what happened. I am over 85,000 miles now, so past the federally mandated warranty for the converter. Has anyone got results from Honda after 80k on this issue?
