Default OBD II Port not communicating

Hi all. I had a CEL pop up a couple of days ago, so I went in to my local auto parts store to pull the codes and my OBD port would not connect/communicate with the code reader! I don't really notice any difference in the way the car drives...maybe the idle is a bit rougher or maybe I'm just over analyzing everything because of the CEL. Car is bone stock other than audio stuff and nothing has needed attention during my 2 year ownership other than fluids/plugs/filters/clutch master & slave cylinders. Auto parts guy suggested a failing ECU.

I pulled the fuse to reset the CEL and it didn't immediately come back on, so there's that. BUT I need the OBD port to function for my yearly inspection/emissions testing due next month!

Any thoughts/suggestions are much appreciated. I'll be gone for the weekend but will have a couple of days next week to continue my troubleshooting.

2005 model year.

It is more likely the system used was not compatible (or mis set). Try another shop.
