Default oil burn

Dear all,

Sorry I am new into this forum. I just got my 2001 s2k 3 months ago with 40k miles now. I have been burning engine oil (mobil 1 5W-30) from oil dip stick max mark to 20% mark in 1 month (about 1000 miles later). Is this common on a s2k? Should I use STP Engine Leak oil additive? Should I use mineral oil instead of synethetic?

What happened here and how should I proceed?

I am in tropical weather full year about 90F. My oil temp gauge does not go pass 200F.

Thanks a lot!!!

Hi:
Just check it at every fuel fillup, and top off as needed. Don't put oil additives in the car. Syn is fine for oil. Do a search for the s2000 oil notice sent out to dealers if you'd like more info.

I lose some oil EVERY week... would that be too much? I'm using mobil1 10w30... I drive anywhere from 300-600 miles a week. I am by no means excessivly dipping around. I am very nice to the car, other than rare occasions, I NEVER take it above 5000, 5500 rpm. I only VTEC a few times a week for short durations. Just this past week, the oil came down 2 X's on the dipstick. I did an oil change like 3 weeks ago or something, and since then the oil has come down at least 1/2 to 1 X every week.

Now is that excessive oil burn??

On my last s2000 I'd go through 1/2 quart every 1000-1500 miles, or a 1 quart in the same interval if I was driving hard alot. I haven't had this one long enough to see if it does the same yet.

S2000's tend to use up oil. There a hard rev'n little buggers

Also I'd make sure to use the real honda oil filters instead of that fram crap. Someone split them open to compare and the honda S2000 filter is better.

Yea I have the Honda filter I made sure of it. If you lost that much oil after 1000-1500 then I'm guessing I am losing too much oil I just don't want to have to tear down my motor to get new rings or anything.

I used to have a JDM ITR in my civic, and thats a pretty high revving motor too (8400 rpm redline) and that didn't lose NEARLY as much oil. Hell I don't think it burned any oil, maybe VERY little after like 3000 miles when I was due for an oil change.

So could it be about time I need to rebuild my motor? I have ~80,600 miles...

Don't take my oil consumption to heart. Every car is different, some S2k's burned more than mine, some less.

If your getting blue black smoke from your exhaust or gas in your oil I'd be worried. If not your rings are probably ok. I'd also check and see if you have oil in your coolant... though I'm not sure if that's even possible on the s2k... Maybe Xviper knows, he seem to the resident Mr. Knowitall for the S2k (I mean that as a compliment btw ).

The only other thing I could think of is check around your filter for oil. It may be that the filter isn't sealing properly and is leaking under pressure when the car is running.

Otherwise if you're not finding oil spots in your garage or driveway I wouldn't panic. There's a reason Honda says in the manual to check the oil after every tank of gas.

Hmm, I guess I won't lol. I don't have any of those symptoms so I'll try to put my mind at ease. I'm just VERRYYY paranoid when it comes to my car. The slightest noise puts me on edge, the slightest vibration makes my heart skip a beat, LoL. And since we all know the S2K is full of those, I'm always on the edge of my seat (as much as i can be while driving, LoL). My friends in the car are always like man STFU theres nothing wrong, we dont hear ANYTHING youre saying...

And yea, I was hoping xviper could come in and chime in... I already harassed him about my oil woes a few weeks ago Maybe he's too annoyed at my constant bickering to say anything, LoL

Ya the first time on my last S2k I saw the oil low I freaked, as none of my other cars did that haha.

But your in the wrong car if noises or oil consumption freak you out.

They freak me out, but only because I care about my car soo much I'm ready to take it in to a shop the second I hear a sound, LoL...

After having the S, I feel as if the car was made for me. Looks incredible, performs beautifully... and I love to have a car that feels and performs like my S. That is why I want to make sure about this oil thing. I'll take it to a shop like tomorrow if necessary if I find that this oil thing is something serious. I don't want any major damage...

This is not excessive for an S2000.
Should I use STP Engine Leak oil additive?
NO! Your engine may not be "leaking" oil. STP is like putting in molassus. Don't do it. If it is "leaking", then fix the leak by repairing the fault, not by using GOO like STP.
Should I use mineral oil instead of synethetic?
Wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

You should be using a 10W30. If you stay with synthetic, go with 10W40, but no thicker.

Without telling us the age and mileage on your car, this is hard to say.

No, not based on what you've posted here. Always do compression and leak down test before making such decisions. You shouldn't be tearing down an expensive engine like this solely on the basis of oil consumption. It's not an old Firebird.
I'd also check and see if you have oil in your coolant... though I'm not sure if that's even possible on the s2k.
Anything is possible, but this is easily seen in the exhaust as white smoke and you'd see it in the coolant level dropping all the time.

It always a good idea to be checking for leaks.
