Default Oil change

How long can I go with Mobil 1 in between oil changes. I only drive the car on weekends and rarely during the week. If I just went by mileage I would only change it once a year. Is this ok?

if you don't accumulate enough mileage over a year to warrant an oil change by mileage, i think the recommendation is to still change the filter every 6 months and top off the oil as needed.

Change oil EVERY 3,000 mi or 3 MONTHS, whichever comes first. Oil can sit too long in an engine that hasn't been running and the acids in the oil can destroy bearings, so says MotorWeek's Pat Goss. As expensive as our engines are ($12k), I'd follow that reccomendation.

3000 mile oil changes are a waste. every expert knows that.

read our oil journals located in the technical forum please. before road rage comes in and reads your post.... lol

Conventional oil in our cars can go 5000 miles no problem. synthetics 7500+. 3000 miles is an old mantra that too many can't let go. you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and that seems to include longer drain intervals.

aside from that, the factory oil has addatives and a high moly count which is needed for proper breakin. who are you going to believe? some tool in an auto magazine, or the engineers that designed the car and say the factory oil should be left in for 7500 miles for proper breakin?

My S is driven on weekdays, rarely on weekends. But since my commute is fairly short, about 5 miles each way, my S accumulates about 7k miles/year. The first two oil changes before 10k miles was 6 months with conventional oil. The last oil change was done at 10k miles with Mobil1 and I am going to leave it in the crankcase for 7500 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.

adb280z, since your S does not get driven a lot of miles, then you should change oil based on time: 6 months for conventional oil, 1 year for synthetic oil. Make sure to use Honda PCX oil filter each time you change your oil. PCX filter is good for once a year change.

Thanks for the tip with the filter, I've never changed it myself but I want to do it from now on. Just bought a house this year with a garage so I have the space. Couldn't work on anything at my old apartment.

I drive as much as you do...averaging 6000miles from April to November.
I change my oil in the spring and then leave it in there all season. Your ok to leave it in there all year.
