Default Oil Change question

I got a quick question concerning oil changes. Today i changed my oil and when i installed the filter i forgot to put the washer over the threading on the engine. I haven't started it up yet but and I am wondering if the washer is absolutely necessary??? Do I need to do the whole damn thing over again?? Thanks guys.

Are you referring to the crush washer that goes on the oil drain bolt or are you referring to the rubber gasket on the Oil Filter? Either way....both are necessary to prevent leaks and form a tight seal.

Please explain what you mean by this. There is no washer on the oil filter. There is a rubber gasket that should have been wiped with oil to get it wet. The only washer is an aluminum crush washer that goes onto the drain plug bolt. Then there is a plastic ring that must be seated into the groove under the oil fill cap.

As Ken said, BOTH are necessary.

That washer was supposed to go on the drain bolt. If you reinstalled the drain bolt with the washer that it had before, no biggie. But to get the most perfect seal it is preferred to use a new washer each time.

It doesn't go on the filter, even though they give it to you with the filter. It's sort of like an "oil change kit".

good thing you "forgot" to put the washer on the threaded oil filter pickup....... no washer belongs there. it isnt just a honda thing, when installing the oil filter next time, just insure that you dab the new oil filter with some fresh oil around the rubber piece, screw onto the threads and firmly hand tighten.

next time remember to install the washer they give you onto the drain plug.

Bad advice, actually. Honda has a torque spec for the filter, or they also recommend the equivalent "7/8 of a full turn after the first contact". Either way it is quite a bit more than what most people consider "hand tightened". S2000 filters that were just hand tightened have been known to come loose.
