Yeah, the PCV should rattle easily. If it isnt, it WOULD explain part (or a little) of the oil consumption - the oil actually vaporizes/is thrown into the air in the valvetrain and the PCV valve will suck that into the intake - you wont see smoke since its very small quantities. Anyway, if thats the problem _or_ not, you should still change it, as it usually only costs 5 bucks or so @ a autoparts store and it does wonders for oil consumption.

The oil getting old will tend to thin out also, but if its instantaneous like you said, I'd deff. look somewhere else.

hows many miles when you bought the car? and was the previous owner an elder?

it could be your piston rings or bad valve seals. oil comes down your valves overnight and when you run it, it burns the oil

you use Vtec too much , piston ring to break too. if previous owner drives it lightly and you drive it hard

^well, he had the car for a while so he should know how it is consuming oil. I was trying to point out smaller problems that MIGHT be causing it - yeah, if its not the small problems, it will probably be a ring or piston or cylinder wall problem...but hopefully its not.

no the previous owner was not an elder...but I did drive it lightly for awhile when I bought it. My tips are not black or dirty at all. I think it might be time for a new PCV valve. Engine is running great though so who knows. will report back...

AP1 definitely seem to burn more oil, but I have another theory about S2000s: they are highly sensitive to proper break in, and most people don't do it right

I think you have to take it easy on these engines longer than normal, and most people do just the opposite. It's also important to change the oil frequently during break-in. All I know is my engine doesn't use a drop, but I've been careful with it and changed the oil four times in the first 10k. I'm now running Amsoil 10w-30

50ish k km (30ish k miles) on the engine (castrol syntec 10w30)

things i have recently changed:

using shell with nitrogen (not sure if it could be the cause)

driving habit (probably a bit harder now that im getting used to the car)

however, my recent trip was about 500 km highway cruising. the pcv seemed abnormally unrattlely lol...and may even be original so ill replace that i think.

Syntec is one of the crappier synthetics (high volatility), try Amsoil, Synpower, or Mobil 1 EP. So far I've been pretty impressed with Amsoil, every one of their products I've tried seems to outperform everything else.

was thinking about amsoil. if the pcv doesnt make a change. For me I just used castrol because it was tried and true for me (and $$$,availability - without jumping up to a 'true' syn just yet). will continue to report back. thanks everyone.

high volatility= high burn off?
