OIL/GAS EATING MACHINE
Hi fellow s2ki members. Well i have a problem, i looked around and i see that you guys don't burn nearly as much oil as i do, i also read some of you guys are a spirited vtec person..well i am too. I just love to enjoy the 9k redline of my ap1. I have no idea why my car killed so much oil, i know i vtec a lot but i mean this seems way too much oil consumption i'm constantly pouring in oil. Running 10w30 mobil 1. in about 2500 miles i burnted a total of 6quarts of oil =x. And when i get a full tank it usually shows 11 gallons, the whole tank gets me about 180 miles. i dont vtec as often because gas is killing me but a few times a day. i tried using fuel system cleaner, and even changed to denso iridiums..i used to be able to get 210. then it all went down the drain and the oil also. any tips?
Okay. Woah. Wait.
6 quarts per 2,500 miles? That's crazy.
You have blue smoke out the back under throttle, right? (piston rings)
~16mpg isn't that horrible if you vtec a lot, its not abnormally low for a lot of vtec time.
Don't waste time with fuel/injector cleaners, its time you got your engine checked out.

I dun't burn that much oil, although it seems to burn the most when I'm running full tilt boogie for about 500 miles, but it still ain't that much at all.

i was using "mobil 1 extendened performance 10w-30" everything was fine and dandy, weather i vtec all the time or not, but for some reason they do not sell that oil no more in my area, just the regular mobil 1 plain synthetic so since the last 2 oil changes ive used the regular mobil 1 and it has lasted me sh*t!! i mean i got to throw in like one or two quarts after 2-3 weeks from the oil change, just put another quart in 2 days ago, now i dont know weather its the oil its self, but its kinda odd that ever since i switched back to the regular mobil 1 it has been like this since, gotta check my oil like every 3 days now but the car runs perfectly fine all the time
There are several folks who use standard M1 that complain about excessive oil burn - but your burn rate is off the charts. I'd suspect you may have a major problem brewing. You may want to have a leak-down and compression test done initially to identify or eliminate if you have any piston ring leakage problems. I've only heard of oil consumption rates that high in cars where valve stem seals have failed.
The easiest fix for the short term is to switch to another oil. I use Amsoil 10W30 and my car consumes (on average) less than 0.25 qts per 3,000 miles. You can order it directly from their website (www.amsoil.com).
An alternate oil that typically has relatively low consumtion rates is Red Line. It's a little more expensive than Amsoil. You can order it from a number of online catalog sites like Jegs, or from the Market place on this site. I don't know which sites are the cheapest, so you'll have to shop around. Just for note: always use the OEM filter for the S2000 - see the Oil Journals for more information on that.
As for the fuel consumption rates - they're not totally out to lunch like your oil consuption rates, and may or may not be related to the oil consumption problem. However, using a fuel treatment/injector cleaner won't hurt. The best fuel injector cleaner I've used is Red Line's SI-1 (has the Road Rage stamp of approval). You can get it at most Pep Boys stores, or at the online spots I mentioned above. It will take one to two tanks of use to clean your injectors, and SI-1 is meant to be used every tankful as well (1-2 oz with every tank - after the initial treatment).
An alternative is Amsoil's Performance Improver. Very similar in application and results. Try keeping out of vtec for one tankful and see how much your consumtion goes down.
The worst (stock) consumption rate I've personally seen is about 19mpg (lots of vtec in the city). The best highway consumption rate was just at 30mpg - a long road trip and kept it about 70mph. My consumption rate for my car's current configuration (4.57s and an '04 transmission) is about 25-28mpg hwy, and about 18-22mpg for city.
Good luck.
