Default Oil indicator light

Fellas..

How long does your oil indicator light stay on after start? Mine tends to hang for 3 to 4 seconds. Oil level is always fine, and my car tends do do this. But sometimes i almost reach for the key to shut her down. I have an AP1 with what i estimate is about 80K on the motor ( It was a factory replacement around 50K miles, clock shows 131K )

Just wondering, ive never really see anyone here talk about the oil pump unless they have a blown motor to deal with.

I use 10w30 Castrol Edge or Amsoil ( when i can float the cash ). Always use OEM filter.

It's normal for it to come on for a little bit after startup, as long as it doesn't stay on you should be ok.

I noticed right before my engine spun a bearing, it would stay on for a couple seconds immediately after turning the car off IE there wasn't enough time for oil to really drain back past the ADBV. Most of the time, you'll get oil pressure instantly if the car has been turned off within the last few minutes. Mine would stay on similar to the length of time it takes to fill a small oil filter after changing the oil, obviously due to excessive bearing clearance.

That doesn't sound normal at all. That light should only be on while the car is cranking. As soon as ur car starts the light should disappear . The only time that light stays on even for a second or 2 could be after an oil change.

As long as it doesn't come on while running, you should be fine however the only way to know for sure is with an oil pressure gauge.

Do you let your car sit for long periods of time in between starts?

Either way the idiot light is useless, get an oil pressure gauge.

In his original post he says it's on while running to the point where he's nervous and wants to shut the car off. That's not normal. Even if his car sits for awhile the most the oil light should do is a quick flutter and then turn off.

To Op. Go on youtube and type in start up s2000. As u can see on normal running s2000's the light turns off immediately when the car starts

Like I said, only way to know for sure is with an oil pressure gauge.

Edit: 3-4 seconds does seem like a long time, but his oil pressure sensor could just be tired, they do go bad.

Try replacing the oil filter first. May just be a bad ADBV.

Just fyi, mine does this sometimes however I do have a oil pressure gauge hooked up and my pressure is fine. Like I said in my previous post, the switches can go bad, heck mine is 12 years old.
