had the exhaust off to check out the valves but not sure if there was anything bent tbh... hes saying obviously the cylinder head needs to come off first to see whats what.

Some mechanics...ugh.

A leakdown test will tell EXACTLY what your problem is. Intake valve, exhaust valve, or piston blowby.

I'll put my money on a pitted/bent exhaust valve.

Personally I would just do the leakdown. It takes almost no time to do and it will tell you exactly where to look..

You will NOT see a bent valve until the head comes off, gets disassembled, and you put the valves in a valve lathe. You will see no impressions in the pistons, or marks on the valves.

DO THE LEAKDOWN, and find your issure BEFORE you take the head off. once its off, you may never find it.

A good mechanic will tell you:

-% of leakdown
-where the leak is going (out the exhaust, out the intake, or into the crankcase)

And if he can not do this for you, find another mechanic. Because his lack of ability to do a SIMPLE leakdown test will reflect his abilty to fix it properly and you will NEVER get out of the UTH forum and enjoy your custom car!

Trust me, you have before.
