It seems that this engine burns GTL (Gas to Liquid) based oil. These Oil is used by Shell, Pennzoil, Quakerstate.
In europe, 98% of the S2000 owners use 5w-40 Oil with great sucess. A 5w-40 oil with Porsche A40 / MB 229.5 specification fit the bill.
Liqui Moly has a Real Synthetic (Group IV / PAO) in his cataouge, the "Synthoil High tech". Liqui Moly is the Nr. 1 Brand here in Germany. Saying this, the german Oil company ROWE has a extremly good fully synthetic (Group IV / PAO) 5w-40 in their catalouge. Should be available in the USA. https://www.rowe-oil.us/shop/produkt...ae-5w-40-20001 The used oil anlyses in the german motor oil forum showed that this oil performed really well in all cars.
But .. every high quality brand oil from Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline, and so on from the shelf of your local car parts dealer or walmart will work fine. Change it often.
No need for fancy stuff. Really. I dont know how some fancy jugs from a german oil company have found their way in the oil stash in my basement that will mix into a 7.5w-40 when you pour them togehter.
Must be a lunatic how do this.
Yes. Collect it and recycle it. While my last posting was with a little bit of Humor, it´s allways noteworthy to see that most US owners use a xxW-30 oil while most European owners use a xxW-40 oil in ther S2000.
It seems like the engine runs forever with any quality oil, but i still prefer the "Better", higher qualitiy oil. And i know that this is mostly for the "good feeling".
I get the 5 liter/quart bottle at a chain store here called Wal Mart. Mobil 1 0W-30. It runs about $26. Much less expensive than getting individual quarts especially at most auto parts stores. I prefer to change the oil at 3K miles or one year just because I like to. I also do the diff each year with another Mobil 1 75W-90. Amsoil synthetic manual transmission oil rounds it out, For brake fluid I use ATE SL.6.
Here in Germany, when your car is under waranty, the dealership charges you 30 € per Liter/quart. A good quality oil is about 10 € per Liter/Quart at your local parts dealer. Euro and Dollar are equal 1:1 at the Moment.
I found a deal online for the Rowe racing oil, it was 14 € / Liter. Yes, 140 € for 10 Quarts of oil.
I change the engine oil with the Filter once a year, after about 6000 Kilometers = 3800 Miles. I will change gear and Differential oil this year again, after 4 years and 20.000 Km =12000 Miles.
Most german car owners never change the gear - or differential oil and use the engine oil for 15.000 or 30.000 km (9000 or 18500 Miles) as indicatetd by the car manufacturer. Most People here think that i am crazy changing oil so often. "You waste your Money!" Totaly different compared to the US.
When the car is under waranty, no. When you car is out of waranty, the dealer ship will try to sell their expensive oil. But most will accept it when you bring you own oil.
Independant dealerships that care for all makes and older cars usually sell oil much cheaper.
Here in the good ol USA, we can take a new car, under warranty, and have the oil changed at a place that may not be dealer. Under the law, if it was a proper service, the warranty must still be valid.
You are not forced into shelling out big Euros for dealer servicing.
