Oil Usage During Break-In
#1
Has anyone noticed unusual oil usage during break-in? Is everyone out there checking the fluid levels at each gas station fill-up? I just had my S2000 suffer major damage due to oil deprivation - there was no warning, only valve noise and several minutes later engine failure. The oil was 3.5 qts down at 2000 miles. No warning lights, nothing. I've noticed a few posts with some oil use; what is the norm?

Each engine and break-in is different. It is not abnormal for an engine to use quite a bit of oil before the rings seat, maybe a quart in less than 500 miles. On the other hand many never use a drop of oil.

Just checked mine today and still no usage. 600 miles. What side of the dipstick is the correct side. I've heard the passenger side is the right one to read.
What oil is everyone using when additional is required before the first service. I was planning on changing at 3000 to Mobil 1 10W 30.

Tons of discussion on this topic, including in car talk forum. Most folks seem to use some oil in the first few thousand miles. It is always a ggod idea to check oil at every fill up, although after a few thousand miles, and establishing that iones car isn't using oil, one might check less often

Dont let higher milage get you to let your gaurd down, 25,000 miles I still use oil, a little less than a quart for 2500 miles, but that was alot of time in VTEC country.
Mine never ate up that much oil in highway mode.
Oh Yeah, My first change was at 7500 miles, and by then it hadnt used more than 1/2 quart, but I didnt drive it that hard either.

Eric,
My car used an extraordinary amount of oil. In fact, I just had my short block replaced at around 2900 and Honda attributed it to low oil. Check your oil at every gas fill up. You are actually required to check the oil at each fill up under the owners' manual. I was told by Honda customer relations that if the oil usage gets out of hand you should report it to the dealer.
By the way, I received no warning either. No oil light, no check engine light, nada. Just clickity-click-click-click and then the sound of my car getting flatbedded to the dealer.

Elund, do search on #4 cylinder failures. First sign of problem is valve noise. May not be related to low oil. This may be important if the dealer starts blaming you for the failure.
What's the dealer doing for you?

After having asked my dealer about the #4 cyl failure that has struck a couple of the cars, it appears as though Honda's offical position on this matter is that ALL of the failures have occured due to low oil. I do not know what to think, but I do know that checking my oil at fill up is cheaper than getting a new engine. BTW does any one know what type of oil to add if it gets low durring break in?

Hi Eric - I also had my engine go south after a day at Streets of Willow - no warning, no oil light.
Dealer said oil starvation was the culprit. Honda replaced the motor (under warranty) and since, I've checked the oil everytime I refuel. I notice when I stay out of VTEC revs (say lots of stop and go commute driving), there's NO oil consumption. If I end up with some open space and let the engine run free, it will start to consume some oil.
Keep your guard up and check it frequently.
