Default One hot transmission!

I went on a 500 mile drive this weekend. It was a combination of mountain roads and open highways. I had about 2000 miles on my S2K when I started out. The heat coming from the passenger side of the driveshaft tunnel was intense after about 400 miles. I assume it was from the transmission. It did not do this again on the return 500 mile trip. Has anyone had this happen or know why it might have gotten so hot?

The heat you describe is quite normal and varies depending on the airflow under the car. This is dependent upon the outside windspeed and direction. Keep in mind that not only does the tranny get very hot but the exhaust pipe runs along this same "tunnel" and contributes to the heat that comes up. It can be quite alarming if you are not used to it. My experience is that the S2000 is NOT the only car out there that puts this much heat up through the central tunnel.

I think it was designed that way so your coffee stays hot in the cup holder.

Yeah, normal, but the car has to become a bit heat-soaked before it is very noticeable. You are likely to first become aware of it on a trip such as yours, especially in hot weather.

xviper,
Thanks for the reply. It fits with the scenario. It was about 93 degrees outside, going and returning home. The difference was that going out was in the mountains for much of the time and therefore the speeds were not as great but the engine and transmission revs were higher than on the return trip. The return trip was at higher speeds but on the open highway. I was a bit alarmed at the heat but if that is typical of certain conditions, it's worth it for the super performance and great handling...Thanks again.
