Is this one of the signs of cracked retainers?
Owned my current s2000 for about 7 years now and it recently developed a sound on a cold start that will last till the vehicle warms up. During the sound the engine vibrates really bad that you can feel it throughout the whole cabin.
I went ahead and did a valve adjustment and followed the DIY step by step and noticed while I was doing the intake side it was much tighter than the exhaust side. It would also take ALOT less movement to adjust compare to the exhaust side. For instance on the exhaust side I can turn it 1/4 turn check clearance and it’ll be close to the clearance I’m trying to set but for the intake side of I turn it a 1/8 of a turn it’ll be too much. I literally have to turn it 1/16 to set the clearance.
Does that seem normal? I’ve done valve adjustments a few times before but this is my first time on a s2000. It still runs great but the noise and vibration on a cold start has me worried.
thanks in advance.

The intake valves have tighter clearance than exhaust. The intake valves have intake air, and fuel to cool them so they expand less. Exhaust valves need more clearance because they only get contact cooling with the guide and seats. As a result they expand more.
You could have bad injector seals. They don't seal well in a cold start allowing unmetered air into the engine.

Maybe the seal expands and limits the unmetered air, when everything is cold during start up, you get unmetered air.

the sound does happen right after you hear that winding down sound that comes on a couple seconds after a cold start. But would the leak cause it to sound like piston slap?

Piston slap gets louder with revs.
