I was speeding up on an on-ramp since traffic was going surprisingly fast today. I just finished topping out 2nd and shifted to third gear doing around 80 miles per hour a SUV later cut me off while I was about to shift to 4th. I stepped on the brakes and misshifted to second gear! The rpms jumped up to redline my speed was around 75 when I shifted back to 3rd and exchanged a few hand gestures to the SUV driver. I did not notice any new sounds or smoke coming out of the engine but I feel so awful about the misshift. Now my question is how should I go about checking engine. I

Well, 9000 rpm in second gear is about 65.7 mph. So 75 in second is about 10,270 rpm, and if you were going faster at the time of the mis-shift of course the rpm would be higher. Doesn't sound too good. A compression check should disclose any bent valves.

From what other more technicaly inclined member have said previously a mild overrev to 10000rpm will not do any damage. Once you hit 12000rpms its a totally different story.

A faint ticking sound is normal when you listen to the engine.

If your overrev resulted in bent valves you would know about it.

You would more then likely have a check engine light and the engine would run real rough.

Relax and be more careful next time.

If your car is still running you are ok. I had a similar problem driving at 80 in 3rd gear, and instead of putting it into 4th I hit a bump in the road causing me to mis-shift into 2nd. Wasn't a loving sound, I basically blew the motor and Honda took care of me considering it was only 900 miles.

Your clutch may have also been slipping a bit while your car was quickly slowing down. Your engine may not have ever gotten over 9500 RPMs.

The ticking you are hearing is most likely the normal valve train noise that all Hondas have.

Funny, I was just about to ask this same question. I driving home, been up for >36hrs straight (surgeon...not a speed freak), and I misshifted from 5th to 2nd the redline went to about 3 redbars (1000? or more...don't know if those bars are measured different). Anyhow, I immediately shifted and car seems to be running fine. So, you guys think a compression check is not warrented? Thanks
