Over Rev
Somebody give me the definition please. I think this term is used to loosely. I know a mechanical over rev is bad. I've experienced this.
However, people say they over revved a couple times but don't think it hurt the motor. I don't consider hitting the limiter an "over rev". That's what it's there for. I understand it cuts fuel and it's hard on the motor but an occasional touch to the limiter should do zero damage. Correct?
Or am I to understand that even so much as bumping the electronic limiter can cause vlavetrain damage? If so.... Damn

You can mechanically over rev the motor and possible escape damage if you don't over rev it too high, meaning under the 11k rpm zone depending motel year, what year valve springs etc...but hitting the rev limiter won't cause a over rev in it of itself...since its there to cut fuel out before damage can occur.

Which in normal circumstances requires forced mechanical over revving. You can't or shouldn't be able to physically turn the motor past a safe operating rpm.
The reason I asked is because of all the folks that have done this. I've read a ton of posts that say ive only over revved my motor once or twice. I'm guessing they mean mechanically.
You can never damage the engine if you hit max rpm coming up from below, i.e., accelerating in gear. The rev limiter cutoff will protect you, which it does by shutting off the fuel flow. The danger is mechanical over-rev from above, such as when you inadvertently downshift 5-2 at 75 mph when 5-4 was intended. This forces the engine mechanically to dangerous rpm's, from which the [electronic] rev limiter cannot protect it.
^ I have done that at least 1-2 on freeway and once at the track (all by accident). It's not too bad as long as you dont let it prolong for more than 1-2 secs. I did have my engine inspected afterward by Evasive and everything is mechanically sound.
