Default Over rev and head replacement

at about 26,000 miles on my MY04, I started getting a really rough idle at warm up, followed by CEL lights from time to time. I downloaded and cleared P0301 and P1399 several times before taking the car in for service. I was told that the Honda Dealer retrieved an over rev code, and that the car would need headwork. (the only time that I had ever mis-shifted was at about 8,000 miles, but I never let the clutch all the way out, because the car was really slowing down fast). The head shop checked everything out, and recommended replacing the valve positioners in hole #1. The honda mechs put the head back on, and the car seemed to be fine for about 4,000 miles. Then, I started getting the same codes again. This time, after having moved to a different state, I took it to a different Honda shop. There was no record of any over rev, but they would not open the engine up under warranty. I authorized the labor, and they found that the same problem existed in the head. Neither the dealership, nor Honda would honor warranty, because the head shop in california used non-honda parts (not my decision). Honda tech-line recommended replacing the entire head assy. this time. I am getting a partial refund from the first repair, but my question is, can the original head be used for anything? Honda tells me that you can't replace valve positioners with any success. Any suggestions?

If you mean valve guides by valve positioners...the are frequently replaced..no problem. The factory valve guides do wear out and need replacement eventually.

man that hurts, thats def gonna be an expensive repair if the dealership does it. the head, as long as its not cracked, should be very useable or sellable. hell, since your having so much done, might as well have them put in a better valvetrain that is stronger at higher rpms. i am gonna guess this overrev was cauased by a mis shift.

I am assuming valve guides and positioners arre synonymous, but I'm not completely sure. The total repair cost me $5,400, minus the $1,100 refund from the lasst repair. I kept all of the old parts, so I am looking for suggestions on whether I should repair it and sell it, or are there some good mods to do for better performance sometime down the road. If anyone knows of a reputable place to do repairs/mods in Texas, please let me know.

When I over-reved I had my entire head re-machined... New valves, retainers, springs. My entire top end was re-machined and replaced every thing with new parts and my I got charged $980 for everything including labor... 10,000 miles later I check my compression and it is still at 225 across the board. I suggest you find a private tuner shop and let them do the work if you cant get it for free.

WOW...$5,400 to replace the HEAD?????? that's a rip. Hell in that price range I'd rather get a new complete 2.2L engine for ~4k and pay the 1.5-2K to install it
