Default Over rev scare

Hi all,

I am a pretty new s2000 owner and kind of a lurker here on the forums. But any help would be greatly appreciated right now.

First off, my car is a 2003 model and has about 58k miles on it. I never drive it hard or do anything stupid in it.

Today I was driving around in a industrial area with a few nice roads. During this time I was making a turn, probably around 30mph. I was in 4th while approaching the turn so about halfway through the turn I downshifted to 3rd. As you can tell I was not going fast at all. I thought I had shifted into gear so I put my foot into the gas but as I did this, the revs went up crazy fast to what seemed like redline(its really hard for me to tell with this digital display). But I wasnt going anywhere. I had pretty much not engadged 3rd and was still in neutral.

Did I hurt my car, I am really sick about this right now. I have never redlined this car, and to do it in such a stupid way. If I take it to a mechanic, will they be able to tell if there is damage? I don't want to take it to Honda because it is under warranty.

You should be fine if it was in neutral. The rev limiter will kick in and won't let you go over 9300rpms.

The bad part is when you are (for example) in fourth at around 90 and shift it into 2nd....this will cut past the rev limiter and might damage parts.

If you were not in gear, you'll be fine. There's a rev limiter in the car to keep it in check.

ok. well that is reassuring. I am sure It couldnt have been in gear. I mean I seriously was only going 25-30mph. and I was definitly shifting up, as in to 3rd. Even if I was going into 2nd at this speed there is no way that the revs would have jumped up so fast like that by pressing the gas pedal.

Sigh, I am just such a worry wort over things like this. I wont be able to sleep tonight. lol.

2nd gear will hit 60 mph. You're fine.

You should. thats why the car was made for. I've redlined my car everyday since the day i bought it and it still purrs like it did in day 1. I've gone off the tachometer about 4 times and my car seems fine but i wouldn't be surprised if my engine blows someday.

If you hit redline as described, it is not an over-rev, you did no damage, your car is fine.
