hey gang, I accidentally put the car in 2nd gear going about 70mph on the highway. I guess I wasn't paying attention. I recognized it right away as soon as the clutch started to engage. I'm really not sure if I've over-revved the motor because I disengaged the clutch quickly, but I did see the tach go way up for a split second. It seems to run fine and strong. I only have 1200 miles on the car?
Does anyone know if I did any major damage to the pistons, wrist pins or crank? anyone do this by accident and have any bad outcomes?

 

Then noone can be really sure what the consequences will be.
2nd gear on your car at redline is 56.5 mph. You slammed it into 2nd at 70 mph, but since you don't really know enough to say what exactly happened in terms of just how much clutch engagement you actually did, we can't give you the assurances you are hoping for.

About a 6 months ago my friend was racing in this RSXS and happend to misshifted during the 3-4th shift to 2nd. He was doing around 90 when he put it back into second, I was sitting in the passenger and saw his tach easily shoot up to 11-12k. However, his car runs fine. He dyno'd it not too long ago and put down 175HP and 125TQ, about right for an RSXS with a CAI.


On the bad side, you may have damaged your valvetrain. No one knows for sure, but if you are willing to cough up the dough, I'd reccomend on getting it checked out, just to be extra safe. Best of luck.

 

Bottom end of the engine is most likely fine.

If it idles smooth, you're prolly ok too. The first thing to break is going to be the valve retainers. If you know what to look for, all you need to pull is the valve cover. I have a thread somewhere with pics on what to look for.

 

It runs fine and idles fine. Should I take it to a dealer or an independent mechanic to get it checked out?? How much should I expect to pay for "checking it out?". I don't want to get hosed....

 

can an RSX even revolve 12000 times in a minute?

 

I did that, and the clutch exploded. Everything else was fine. Even got them to replace my trans under warranty at the same time. it should be fine.

 

Not on its own but we're talking "mechanical" over-rev here.
