Overheated..
So I have a 2000 AP1 and tonight i was driving it...not beating on it like crazy but giving it a good drive...all of a sudden I notice steam, and saw the engine was all the way hot
I drove down the street to the closest gas station pulled in. Noticed there was some coolant on the undercarriage...the hoses looked intact, the radiator I guess was alright...I let it sit for 20 till it was about normal heat. Started her up and drove her home 5 mins away and it never got hot again...and it wasn't leaking in my driveway either
What do you guys think?? New thermostat? Any engine damage?
haven't had the car for more than a month

Hate to say it, but usually with these motors if they are driven full hot there is engine damage. It's hard to say and quite impossible to say for sure in your case. Almost sounds like you had air somewhere that expanded and forced coolant out of your overflow if you didn't have any leaking afterwards.....once again, it's hard to say for sure....

It's hard to say for sure....a lot of things can happen if the engine overheats. First I would try and pinpoint where you lost coolant from. Try and do a bleed of the system to make sure there isn't air in there (anymore). Do a compression and leakdown test to make sure you didn't deform one of your cylinders/head. If all things check out, then you may have been spared...

Pull the thermostat housing cover and see if it's stuck open or closed... Other than that you have to heat it to see at what temperature it's actually opening. Easier just to buy a known good one. (or new one)
Just realized that wasn't very clear. Once you've checked to make sure it isn't stuck open/closed, reinstall it and bring the car to operating temp...if it doesn't open, it's going to go beyond 3 bars..... the SECOND it goes to 4 bars from not opening, shut it off. You can pretty much guarantee that it's bad.

it might be bad then...when I was waiting for it to cool down it went up to 4 bars once...then i shut it back off and let it sit for 5 more mins and it never went back up that high. as for compression what are acceptable numbers? it just hit 83k too
