Default p1456 - evaporative emission control system leak

Just got this CEL Code diagnosed:

p1456 - evaporative emission control system leak detected (fuel tank system)

I have a feeling this is the gas cap issue that is so commonly mentioned on the forums. Anyone have more information to share about this?

Are there some additional checks I can make? Some precautions to be wary of?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Loose or bad gas cap. Tighten gas cap, reset ECU. If CEL returns, replace gas gas cap with new one, reset CEL. If CEL returns test purge valve. If this checks out good, it could be a bad fuel filler neck.

but nothing else. The guy at autozone thought it might be a tune up notice. 31k miles. I am going to the dealer tomorrow for the spark plug recall anyways, but I was trying to make sure they don't fu** with me or my wallet while i am there.

If anyone has seen this code, or knows what it is please let me know.

Thanks,

bart

I second this

Just to add to this segment...the fill pipe could be egg shaped or distorted, grabbing the threads of the cap. This will make the cap start clicking before it actually seals against the neck. If you squeeze the cap a little harder and turn it slow, you can overcome the tight threads and get the cap all the way down.

Check your gas cap. My 2002 gas cap would come loose as well. Sometimes it would click 3 times but the cap was still not tight. Dealer replaced the cap under warranty.

Also, you'll need to have the light reset. The light will probably go out itself after a few driving cycles but if you need to reset it now, you'll need to pull out the backup fuse. Check the FAQ in the technical section for the exact fuse location.

What exactly is the purge valve?

Thanks for that, I found it very interesting to see two people post P1456 cel codes in one day.

Anyway - I spent about 3 hours reading the forums today looking at nothing but loose gas cap threads and the like. I'm absolutely certain this is what caused my problem.

I'll be exploring this much more thoroughly. Thanks for the replies!

"Exactly" what it is, would be beyond my ability to explain. Roughly, it is a valve mechanism that is attached to the evaporative cannister under your car near the gas tank. This cannister is for fuel vapor recovery - an emissions device. There is a sensor hat monitors how this purge system is working (or not working).
